What is InfantryReborn?
InfantryReborn is a privately run non-profit organization whose goal is to provide a progressive high-quality alternative to Infantry Online(tm). InfantryReborn utilizes an older version of the Infantry client, however our programmers have added much more functionality into our servers. We have no affiliation with Infantry Online(tm), which is owned by SOE. - We believe heavily in community involvement: our zone rotations are directly influenced by what the players want, not corporate policy.
- We fully support player development: we offer players the chances to actually create their own content (weapons, classes, maps, vehicles, and even zones) and have a sub-community of developers that are more than willing to those interested.
What is Infantry?
Infantry is a massive futuristic multiplayer online wargame that weaves the best elements of real-time strategy, 3D shooters and down and out GungHo into an exciting, racy and immensely flexible game engine that is capable of producing a variety of grossly different gametypes but all equally enjoyable.
What is a Zone? What is an Arena?
Infantry is not simply a game, it's a variety of games that will guarantee to suit most all online gaming itches you suffer from. A zone is one of these games that Infantry offers. It is a segregated expanse of space that is unique from all other areas and contains a custom map and settings. For example, you will notice that there are a number of zones in the game: Capture the Flag, Sports-related, Stationary/Static Flag (capture objectives and hold them). All zones are different and offer games that others do not. Arenas are areas within zones. They are essentially games within the bigger game. For example you may enter a "Capture the Flag" zone (there are a number of them) and find that there are 4 different arenas. These four arenas represent four different CTF games that are completely unrelated except for the fact that they are playing under the same settings and on exact replicas of each others' maps. Game: Infantry -> Zone: CTF -> Arena: Public1, and Game: Infantry -> Zone: CTF -> Arena: Public2, etc. Since it wouldn't be fun to have 200 players on a small map, there are instead several copies of the game running at once, with X amount of players per arena. You are able to switch arenas within a certain zone, through the ?arena command. Essentially everything but the players remain the same in each arena.
Does Infantry have squads/clans?
Sure do! There are in-game commands that allow you and your teammates to group into squads and communicate efficiently enough to operate as a tight combat unit. You can view these squad options by hitting Escape -> Game Functions -> Squad. Here you can make your own squad, change ownership of your squad to a different alias/person, change the squad password, list online squad members etc etc.
Squads are an excellent social branch of Infantry. Also, to participate in most leagues (organized games over a period of time to determine the best squad), you must be a member of a participating squad.
What's the story with the different colored chats?
There are a number of chats you can use. Here is a list of them and how you can use them: - Blue - Public chat (entire arena can read this). To use this chat, simply type your message and press enter (no prefixes). You can specify whether you have to press enter before and after you type a message at the loadup screen - click "View" -> "Keyboard Configuration" and hit "Click Enter when typing messages".
- Yellow - Team chat (all members of your team (people who appear faded yellow in your players list) can read this). To use this chat, put a "//" or a "'" before your message. E.g. //Quick attach! I'm at NmeBase! - all members of your team would receive this message and have a chance to respond to your call.
- Green - Private chat (only one specified person is able to read this). You can use this chat in two ways:
- Firstly, by typing ":" followed by the name of the person you want to privately communicate with followed by another ":". E.g, say for example you wanted to communicate with a friend called SuperStar, you'd type:
:SuperStar:heya friend! We have incoming, teleport to me now! - Secondly, you can place the highlight bar in the online players list (top right box when you're in the game) over your specified recipient and precede your message with a "/"
E.g. /Heya friend! We have incoming, teleport to me now!
- Purple - Squad chat (all online members of your squad will receive this message - Note: only players who have the SAME squad name next to their name on ?teaminfo will receive this message meaning you MUST have received and used the squadpassword from the squad captain to join).
To use this chat, simply type your message preceded by a "#". E.g. #All squad members are required for offensive duty at %coords. Once typed, the "#" immediately becomes "#squadnamehere" so do not be alarmed if your hash suddenly gets your squadname tagged onto the end! - Dirty Yellow - User selected chats (these are customisable chats that you can specify and ask other people to join, therefore the recipients of these messages will be the people who have joined this chat out of their own free will). You can list the online members of these chats by typing ?chat. You can have up to 8 different chats (this may vary in the future). These chats are often used as squad chats as they're simple to use and those who don't want to be flooded with messages as they play are free to leave when they feel like it (this isn't possible with the other chats).
Here's how to use these chats. Say for example you want to 3 different chats, one for friends, one for commandos and one for your squad, the "Elitists". To start your three chatgroups, use the following syntax: ?chat chatgroup1,chatgroup2,chatgroup3 - in our example ours would be ?chat friends, commandos, elitists. Note, the only space in the command is between the "chat" and the first chat group (in this case "friends"). All other spaces are filled with commas. Closing note: At anytime, you can use the ?ignore command. This will prevent any further messages from any of the above chats, from reaching you. Handy if someone's spamming you trying to make you lag out :)
What is a macro?
A macro is a shortcut key that you can use to perform functions quicker and easier. For example, you might use Plasma Mines frequently. Instead of pressing F10 in the dropship (safe area) everytime you die, you could have a macro ready that will restock your supply in a split second. The next Q&A explains the use of macros.
Do I have to hit F10 and buy ammo this slowly or can I use these macro things?
You sure can! A macro is a shortcut key that you can use to perform functions quicker and easier. For example, instead of hitting F10 then click on "Ammo MG" and buy 200 rounds of machine gun shells, use:
?buy Ammo MG:200 then hold Shift+F1 (You can use F1->F12 combined with shift to have up to 12 different macros.) Now to use the macro simply press Shift+F1 and the macro is automatically sent.
Infantry allows you to have up to 24 different macros. See View -> Keyboard/Gamepad Configuration from the Zone Selection Screen for more information.
This allows users the chance to preempt the continual ammunition/equipment drain and allows swift return to the action. You can use all your ammo, return to the dropship, hit Shift-F1 and you'll execute the ?buy ammo rifle:400,plasma mine:4,repulsor coil:#1,frag grenade:4 command. Essentially, you are buying 4 different store items all at once! Firing off these three macros takes around 1-2 seconds and thus is a great time saver if ever you're needed back in the action urgently (NOTE: the # in the ?buy macro means to buy UP TO and NOT ABOVE the amount specified for that particular item).
What is "Rotation Ramp Delay"?
You can find this feature under "Options" after pressing Escape. By reducing this feature lower and lower you essentially make your soldier rotate faster. It's recommended that you keep this at a minimum if you're playing slower classes, such as Heavy Weapons.
Can I make my map/radar larger?
Sure can! Simply right click on either of these and continue to click until you find a suitable zoom factor. Helpful in Ball zones and CTF zones alike.
What ammo does this gun use?
Finding out the ammo that your weapon uses is easy. Firstly, if you've bought the item, right click on the item and hit "i" for "info". Press F4 to get a full screen view of the info readout. Scroll down until you see "Ammo type" (e.g. Ammo Type: Ammo Rifle - this gun uses Rifle Ammo and you should buy it from the F10 "Ammo" listing).
Does Infantry have a sniper mode?
Yep, Infantry has a Sniper Mode! This mode is helpful for any class with long range weapons, such as Infiltrators with Particle Accelerators and Jump Troopers with Sniper Rifles. You can change to Sniper Mode by doing the following: - Sniper Mode ON: Hold Shift + End (and hit it multiple times/hold down for greater distance).
- Sniper Mode OFF: Hold Shift + Home (and hit multiple times/hold down to return to normal view).
I have horrible frame rate playing Infantry. How can I improve my FPS?
Symptoms of low FPS is a choppy-like screen, skipping and sometimes even the monitor freezing up indefinitely. Some of the common modifications include: - Try switching your video mode. Sometimes playing on Windowed Mode provides better FPS than Full Screen, and vise versa. This can be accomplished through the Resolution options outside and in-game. You will have to be using 16-bit color to access Windowed Mode.
- Lower your resolution. This typically improves your FPS, especially on very small screen sizes.
- Install the latest drivers for your video card and monitor.
- Upgrade to the latest version of DirectX.
- Under View -> Advanced Options at the Zone Selection Screen, make checkboxes beside: Show Frame Rate, Render when window is in background, Triple Buffer, and Avoid Page Flipping. This is not guaranteed to work, however. Play around with the settings if required to see what is best for you.
- In-game, goto: Main Menu -> Options -> Graphic Options. Make the following changes:
- Fake Alpha Blending - Yes
- View line-of-sight - Never
- View Line-of-sight Blended - No
- Obscuring Wall Display - Solid
- Show All Thrust/Smoke - No
- Show Weapon Trails - No (NOTE: Yes will make the game look better)
- Show Banners - No
- Energy Bar - Off
Again, play around and see what works.
I get this error message: "Could not establish connection to your location, try again later." What does it mean?
The reasons for the automatic boot include: - You are trying to hack the server
- You are using a hack/cheat to modify packets
- You have an Internet game cheat loaded, that is designed to adjust your CPU's clock.
- You have a corrupted driver that is interfering with the memory locations that Infantry uses on your computer. (Update ALL you drivers: sound card, video adapter, DirectX, modem, etc).
- You are running an application that is interfering with the memory locations that Infantry uses on you computer. (Close and unload other applications. Make sure they are UNLOADED from memory; examples include MP3 players especially Real JukeBox. Disable them so they don't autoload on startup, then reboot before playing Infantry and they won't be loaded).
- You have a malfunctioning CPU clock. Try removing your overclocking or cleaning your cooling fan. Apparently, dirty cooling fans cause some electrical resistance/interference that can effect some CPU clocks. [provided by research monkey]
