The Legacy of the Battlefield
In 1999, a unique top-down tactical MMO shooter hit the screens: Infantry Online. Combining fast-paced arena combat with sprawling multiplayer skirmishes, it quickly built one of the most passionate and competitive grassroots communities in online gaming history.
When Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) officially sunsetted the servers on March 29, 2012, it marked the end of an era—but set the stage for a great revival.
Roots in the Community
During the SOE era, community leaders stepped up to keep the spirit of competition and camaraderie burning bright:
smackrock founded the Mechanized Skirmish League (MSL), which was later renamed to Unified Skirmish League (USL) and grew to become the longest-running and most celebrated competitive league in Infantry history.
Military Police (MP) wore nearly every hat in the organization—serving as League Administrator, Game Administrator, and Community Manager. During SOE, MP steered the USL through many of its foundational seasons, managed community hubs and events, organized the moderator team, coordinated the Player Content Team (PCT), oversaw zone management, contributed to game content, and acted as the vital bridge between the players and SOE leadership.
For both, Infantry wasn't just a game. It was a community forged in chaotic firefights, tight-knit squads, and relentless competition. Smackrock is now the Lead Developer of Infantry Reborn and MP fulfills the role of Community Manager and Game Admin.
A New Chapter: Infantry Reborn
More than a decade after the original servers went dark, the call of the battlefield never faded. Today, smackrock and MP are collaborating alongside a veteran crew of talented, passionate developers to bring this classic back to your modern gaming rig.
Infantry Reborn is the realization of that mission.
